What Is Horse Medicine?
I get asked this a lot. "What is horse medicine, and how is it different from Equine Assisted Learning or Equine Therapy?"
There are so many beautiful and meaningful approaches in the equine world, and each one has its own purpose. Equine Assisted Learning and Equine Therapy are often guided, structured experiences where horses support specific goals, things like learning, emotional growth, confidence, communication, or therapeutic outcomes.
Horse medicine is different. It's rooted in relationship, presence, and partnership. It's an invitation to slow down, step away from the noise of everyday life, and enter into a deeper connection with the horse and with yourself.
For me, the horse is never a tool, a lesson, or a means to an outcome. They are a partner. A sentient being with their own personality, boundaries, wisdom, and choices. The relationship itself is where the medicine lives.
Because of my horses' individual histories, I choose to work at liberty whenever I can.
Some have experienced trauma. Others have had less handling, or have lived in situations where they didn't have much choice.

Liberty means every horse gets to decide whether they want to participate. They are never forced, dominated, or expected to engage. Instead, they are invited, and they always get to say "yes," "not today," or "I'd rather just watch." Honouring that choice is a huge part of how I build trust with them and respect them as partners.
When we honour the horse as a partner, we start to listen differently. We notice their communication, their presence, what they're reflecting back to us. Horses invite us to become more aware of our own emotions, our nervous system, our intuition, and the stories we've been carrying.
Horse medicine isn't about the horse fixing us or handing us answers. It's about creating a space where we can reconnect with our own inner wisdom, feel deeply seen, and remember the parts of ourselves that have maybe been waiting to be rediscovered.
The horse doesn't ask us to be anything other than who we are in that moment. And sometimes, that's exactly where the healing begins.
